I have been a beach treasure collector all my days. When I was a little girl my family lived in both Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong for many years and we were lucky enough to spend long days on white sandy shores. Beach days were very different back then and my Parents collected some incredible shells and coral, back when there were no restrictions.

As an adult I always appreciate how special our beaches are in Scotland, clean and usually empty! I am not a pocket filler like some beachcombers and I rarely take more than one shell or a single pebble as a souvenir of my visit to keep in my memory box. I have spent over a decade looking for the elusive Groatie Buckie shell!  A Groatie Buckie is a tiny Cowrie shell and is considered a symbol of good luck to its finder….like a lucky penny.

I have searched beaches on the far north of Scotland as well as out on the Outer Hebrides. Never disappointed in my search as that alone was the most joyous part. In May 2025 we took a trip to Gairloch. It was my first time on the Big Sands beach, a beach my husband had been to as a child many times. We were the only people there for a while and I finally found my ultimate beach treasure…..in a shallow rockpool. It is the tiniest and most perfect little shell.
